Poland: Country Number Nine

Country number nine on our great global adventure, 52 countries in 52 weeks, was Poland. We were excited to get into the heart of Europe, and as we chose to stay in Kraków, we found a wonderful apartment right in the Old Town Square. The Old Town felt like something out of a storybook, full of history, charm, and beauty. We could not stop wandering its streets and enjoying the atmosphere every single day.

Food and Markets

The food in Poland was a major highlight. We discovered an incredible street market and absolutely dove in. Pierogi became the favorite—fresh, handmade, and filled with all sorts of flavors. Every meal felt authentic and hearty, making food one of the most memorable parts of our stay in Kraków.

Exploring Kraków

We took a lovely canal tour on small, charming boats that gave us a unique view of the city’s architecture and history. Another highlight was visiting the famous Wieliczka Salt Mines. Descending nearly 400 feet underground, we were amazed to see massive chambers, salt-carved walls you can actually taste, and even an enormous cathedral carved entirely out of salt. It was breathtaking and unlike anything we had experienced before.

Unique Experiences

We also visited the Museum of Electronics, a retro gaming collection that let us play classics from decades past. It was quirky, fun, and full of nostalgia.

A Sobering Visit

On our final day in Poland, we visited the Auschwitz Memorial. It was a deeply intense and emotional experience. Walking the grounds was difficult, but it felt important and necessary, a reminder of history that must never be forgotten.

Reflections on Poland

Poland offered a balance of charm, history, and powerful cultural experiences. From the joy of pierogi and canal rides to the solemn weight of Auschwitz, it was a week that left a lasting impact on all of us. Next stop, country number ten, the Czech Republic.
