One of the most incredible experiences on our Iceland adventure was snorkeling in Silfra, right in Thingvellir National Park, just 50 kilometers from Reykjavik. This fissure exists between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates, slowly drifting apart each year, creating a rift filled with crystal clear glacial water filtered through lava fields for decades. The clarity is unbelievable, and yes, you can even taste the water while gliding between two
continents.
We opted for drysuit snorkeling, which keeps you warm and dry in the 2 to 4 degree Celsius water. With thermal layers underneath, it was completely comfortable while exploring this otherworldly place. The visibility is mind-blowing, easily over 100 meters, and the sunlight streaming through the water highlights the rocks and algae along the walls of the canyon. My son even managed to dive upside down for a shot that no guide had ever seen before.
The tour includes all the gear, a guide, photos, hot chocolate afterward, and access to the national park. You feel completely safe, yet adventurous, moving through an underwater world that is truly one of a kind. Snorkeling in Silfra is an absolute must when visiting Iceland, a way to float between continents while surrounded by some of the clearest water you will ever see.
