Country Number Twenty

Country number twenty on our 52 countries in 52 weeks world tour is Tanzania and our very first African adventure. We set our sights on the legendary island of Zanzibar, a place that blends postcard-perfect beaches with deep, moving history.

Ferry to Zanzibar

We landed in Dar es Salaam and caught the morning ferry over to Zanzibar. Let me tell you, that ride was an adventure in itself wild, energetic, and unforgettable. By the time we arrived, the excitement for Africa was in full swing.

Chuini Zanzibar Lodge: Pure Paradise

We checked into Chuini Zanzibar Lodge, and I can honestly say it’s one of the most beautiful luxury resorts I’ve ever stayed in. The location was breathtaking, with ocean views that didn’t look real. The rooms were private and stunning, the staff was warm and welcoming, and the food, five stars all the way. It could not have been better.

Swimming with Sea Turtles

Our first Zanzibar adventure was one we had been waiting for forever: swimming with sea turtles. You’ve seen it all over Instagram, and yes, it’s every bit as magical as it looks. These incredible creatures glide right up to you, and you can even feed them from your hand. The kids loved it, we loved it, and it was an experience we’ll never forget.

Exploring Stone Town

The next day, we explored Stone Town on foot. It was eye-opening to learn about Zanzibar’s role as the hub of the Eastern slave trade. The mix of history, culture, and architecture was powerful and unique. That evening, we invited our cab driver and his family to dinner. They were so warm and genuine, it turned into one of the most rewarding parts of the trip.

Memba Island: Dolphins and Sandbars

The following day we headed to Memba Island, and wow the water there might be the bluest and clearest I’ve ever seen. We rented a boat, found a guide, and jumped straight into the ocean to swim with dolphins again and again. Yes, it’s real. Yes, it’s as amazing as it sounds. To top it off, our captain sliced up fresh fruit for us to enjoy while we relaxed on a sun-soaked sandbar. Out of this world.

Farewell to Zanzibar

Leaving Zanzibar was bittersweet we didn’t want to go. But this was only part one of our Tanzanian adventure. Next up: boarding a bush plane and heading straight for the Serengeti, where the great migration and safari dreams awaited.
