Walking the Edge: Mürren’s Via Ferrata

High above Switzerland’s Lauterbrunnen Valley, the Via Ferrata in Mürren is one of the most thrilling hikes in the Alps. Unlike most via ferratas that climb upward, this one descends from Mürren (1,640 m) down to Gimmelwald. Over three hours, you cover 2.2 km and drop 300 metres, inching along cliff faces, crossing waterfalls, and balancing on a suspension bridge, all with the Bernese 4,000-metre peaks as your backdrop.

For our family, it was unforgettable. I first tackled the route with my daughter, who moved with calm confidence, and then with my son, who overcame his doubts and amazed me with his courage. Watching them face the sheer rock walls and 2,000-foot drops was both terrifying and exhilarating and one of my proudest dad moments.

What makes Mürren’s route special is its rare downhill design, combining jaw-dropping scenery with a manageable challenge for adventurous beginners. Guides are available for anyone who wants extra safety tips and local knowledge, but with rented gear and a bit of nerve, it’s an adventure almost anyone can try.
If you’re in Switzerland, put this experience at the very top of your list. Few activities offer such a mix of adrenaline, natural beauty, and lasting memories.
